Spiritual Significance of Saffron in the Song of Solomon
Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices. — Song of Solomon 4:14
Saffron is a very expensive spice from an orange-yellow flower of the crocus family. It is literally worth its weight in gold because it is the stigmas from which the spice is obtained. Each one is handpicked and placed over a charcoal fire for drying. It takes over 75,000 flowers to make one pound of saffron.
Saffron symbolizes the costly but triumphant faith of the Messiah against His enemy. Believers can live by faith just as the disciples did, knowing that the testing of their faith through fire will be more precious than gold. 1 Peter 1:7-8 says that:
That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see [him] not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.
